Call to Serve is a joint effort of the Partnership and the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to educate a new generation about the importance of a strong civil service, help re-establish links between federal agencies and campuses, and provide students with information about federal jobs.

Before you Start, Create an Account and Search Agent in USAJobs.gov

  • Build and store up to 5 distinct resumes
  • Create and save search agents/jobs
  • Search by agency, occupation, grade, location, etc.
  • Use the USAJobs.gov tutorials
  • Be aware of special hiring programs

Don’t Upload your Resume

  • Review entire job description-5 tabs
  • Have details from previous jobs ready-salaries, supervisors’names, addresses, dates of employment, etc.
  • Detailed lists of specific duties-think skills and chronology
  • Know key words and core competencies
  • Your govt. resume can be 6 pages, relevant and concise

Do

  • Check and re-check your application
  • Use your own language and key words
  • Make every word count
  • Be sure to follow every step in the “How to Apply” section
  • Submit application in a timely fashion

Don’t

  • Inflate your accomplishments, skills, responsibilities
  • Use acronyms unless you are sure everyone knows
  • Start with ‘duties included’ or ‘responsibilities’
  • Include personal information not requested
  • Use the same resume for every job
